Leadlight windows, made and restored in Ballarat since 1909.

Robson Glass designs, makes and restores leadlight windows across Ballarat and regional Victoria, and has done since 1909. We craft new leadlights for doors, windows and feature panels, repair and re-lead damaged leadlight, and restore heritage and church stained glass.

New leadlight, repairs and heritage restoration, all made and mended by hand

Whether you want a brand new leadlight made for a door, a cracked panel put right, or a hundred-year-old church window rebuilt piece by piece, it is the same family workshop and the same craft that started this business in 1909.

New leadlight windows and door panels

We design and make new leadlight to suit your home, from a single decorative panel to a full set of windows. Leadlight is coloured, textured and clear glass cut to a pattern and joined with lead came, so every piece is one of a kind. It is a popular choice for front doors, sidelights and highlights, hallway and stairwell windows, feature panels and period-style additions that suit an older home.

What you get

  • Made to your design, or one we help you develop. We work to your idea, or help shape a pattern that suits the house.
  • A genuine handmade panel. Real cut glass and lead came, not a printed or stuck-on imitation.
  • Built to fit doors, windows and fixed panels. New or existing openings, made to sit and seal properly.

Repairing and re-leading leadlight windows and door panels

Old leadlight does not last forever. Over the years the lead tires and softens, panels start to bow or bulge, sections crack, and glass can become loose or fall out. We repair and re-lead leadlight windows and door panels, matching the original glass and pattern as closely as we can so the repair looks like it was always there.

Common repairs we take on

  • Bowed, bulging or sagging panels. Brought back to shape rather than replaced.
  • Cracked or broken pieces. Replaced and matched to the original glass.
  • Re-leading of tired panels. The old lead is replaced and the panel rebuilt around the original glass.
  • Cracked leadlight door panels. Put right so you keep the original character of the door.
Because we make our own lead, we are rarely stuck waiting on materials, and we can match older profiles that others cannot easily source. Send us a photo of the damaged panel and we will let you know what is involved.

Signs a leadlight may need re-leading

If you are seeing any of these, it is worth having the panel looked at before more damage is done.

Bulging or sagging

The panel bows out of flat or dips in the middle.

Soft or lifting lead

The lead feels spongy or is peeling away from the glass.

Cracks in the glass

New cracks appearing across one or more pieces.

Pieces rattling or gone

Glass that moves in the frame, or has fallen out.

Daylight or draughts

Light or air coming through where the lead used to seal.

Heritage and church stained glass restoration across Victoria

This is the work we are proudest of. When a heritage building has leadlight or stained glass that has reached the end of its life, we carefully remove the panels, rebuild them by hand, and reinstall them, so a window made well over a century ago can last another lifetime.

How we approach it

  • Full removal, rebuild and reinstallation. Failing leadlight and stained glass taken out, rebuilt by hand, and refitted.
  • Sympathetic to the original. Glass, pattern and lead matched so the restored window looks and feels authentic.
  • Comfortable with large, staged projects. Experience with churches, schools, aged-care facilities and heritage homes, working with owners over time.
We have restored whole churches whose stained glass was built 120 years ago, worked through an aged-care group’s buildings across Victoria, and built and restored leadlights at Ballarat High School. Only a handful of people in Victoria still take on work at this scale, and we are one of them.

Unique leadlight craft, passed down over five generations

We started as lead lighters. Our founder, WJ Robson, travelled from England as an apprentice to William Montgomery, Melbourne’s leading stained glass artist, then opened his Ballarat studio in 1909. The glazing business grew out of that craft, and five generations on we still do it by hand.
01
Very few people still do this work
Across Victoria only a handful of workshops take on full leadlight restoration at the scale we can, with only a few younger tradespeople learning the craft.
02
We make our own lead
Robson is one of the few businesses in Australia still producing its own lead came, so we can match old profiles and are rarely held up waiting on materials.
03
A real workshop you can walk into
A genuine Ballarat business with a shopfront, not a mobile-only operator. Come in, show us your project and talk it through.

After the lead and glass to do it yourself?

As well as doing the work, Robson makes and sells its own lead came and supplies a range of coloured glass to hobby leadlighters and the trade. That is a separate side of what we do. This page is about the leadlight we make and restore for you. If you would rather buy the materials and work on a panel yourself, see our supplies page.

Leadlight and restoration across Ballarat and Victoria

Most of our restoration is around Ballarat and the heritage homes here, but we work comfortably anywhere in Victoria for larger jobs like a church restoration, and we will travel interstate for the right project. There are very few workshops that can take on work at this scale, so distance is rarely the deciding factor.

Your leadlight questions answered

What is the difference between leadlight and stained glass?

People use the terms loosely, and there is plenty of overlap. As a rule, leadlight is coloured, textured and clear glass cut to a pattern and joined with lead came, the kind you see in older Australian homes, front doors and hallway windows. Stained glass usually refers to glass that has also been painted and kiln-fired, which is common in church windows. We make and restore both, so the honest answer is: send us a photo and we will tell you exactly what you have.

Can you repair my old leadlight window, or does it need replacing?

Usually it can be repaired. Bowed panels can be brought back to shape, cracked or missing pieces matched and replaced, and tired panels re-leaded so the whole thing is rebuilt around the original glass. We will always tell you honestly when a repair makes sense and when a remake is the better option.

How do I know when a leadlight needs re-leading?

Common signs are a panel that bulges or sags, lead that has gone soft or is lifting, cracks appearing in the glass, pieces that rattle or have fallen out, and daylight or draughts where the lead used to seal. If you are seeing any of these, it is worth having it looked at before more damage is done.

Do you make brand new leadlight for doors and windows?

Yes. We design and make new leadlight to order for doors, sidelights, highlights, windows and feature panels, either to your design or one we help you develop to suit the house. We craft genuine, handmade leadlight glass, not printed imitations.

Can you double glaze a leadlight window?

Standard retrofit double glazing is generally not suitable for an existing leadlight. Once you place a leadlight panel between glass on each side it becomes too thick for the frame, so it is not something we do as a straightforward retrofit. If you want to protect a leadlight from weather or improve comfort, there are other options worth discussing, so talk to us about the panel and what you are trying to achieve. For general double glazing of ordinary windows, see our Retrofit Double Glazing page.

Do you travel outside Ballarat for leadlight work?

Yes. Most of our restoration is around Ballarat and the heritage homes here, but we work comfortably anywhere in Victoria for larger jobs like a church restoration, and we will travel interstate for the right project. There are very few workshops that can take on work of this scale, so distance is rarely the deciding factor.

What does leadlight repair or restoration cost?

Every panel is different. A single cracked piece is a small job, while a full re-lead or a heritage restoration is a more considered one. Send us a photo and we can usually give you a free estimate before we come out.
