Retrofitting double glazing: a sealed double glazed unit fitted into an existing timber sash frame

Double glazing on your existing windows, without replacing them

Retrofitting double glazing means we take out the single pane in your current window and fit a sealed double glazed unit into the same frame. Two panes of glass with an insulating gap between them, sealed as one unit, in place of the single sheet you have now. You keep your existing timber or aluminium frames, and in most cases you would never know the work had been done from the street.
Retrofitting is a genuinely different job from replacing the whole window. No tearing out frames, no re-rendering, no builders through the house for a week. For a lot of older Ballarat homes it is the sensible way to double glaze, so the comfort is modern while the character of the house stays exactly as it is.

What goes into a retrofit unit

The glass and the glazing is our part of the job. We make minor adjustments to the frame to take the thicker unit, and if a timber frame has rotted we liaise with the other trades to sort it before we glaze.

Argon gas is effectively standard on our units because it slows heat transfer better than plain air.

Most homes can be retrofitted, and we will tell you honestly if yours cannot

Around 90% of the homes we look at can be retrofitted, and roughly 90% of aluminium frames suit it too. We tell you up front what we can do, and if yours is one of the few that does not suit retrofitting.
Usually suitable

Windows and doors we can usually double glaze

If you have a mix of window and door types across the house, that is normal. We work out which ones suit and how best to handle the rest.
The exceptions

The few we generally cannot retrofit

A small number of window types do not suit a retrofit unit. We will tell you when we come out to measure.
Timber double glazed windows are one of our most common jobs, and they are where retrofitting really earns its keep, because keeping an original timber frame is exactly what makes a period home feel like itself.

What double glazing really costs, and what changes the price

Every home is different, so we quote after a free measure rather than publish a price list. The honest short answer: our retrofit double glazing runs at a fraction of the patented-system price, and the final figure comes down to a handful of things.
01

How many windows and doors, and their sizes

More glass and larger panes cost more.
02

Frame type and condition

Timber, aluminium, and whether any frames need attention before glazing.
03

Glass options

Standard argon-filled units, or adding a Low-E coating for extra thermal or glare performance.
04

Access

Upstairs windows, awkward openings and bay windows take a little more work.
For simple jobs we can often give you an estimate over the phone or email first. There is no call-out fee to come out and measure.

Retrofit double glazing across Ballarat and the region

We retrofit double glazing all over Ballarat and the surrounding region, and the older, colder homes out in the towns are often where it makes the biggest difference. We travel out toward Ararat, Stawell and the Grampians for this work, so a period home an hour from the shop gets the same warm, quiet result as one down the road.

Your double glazing questions answered

Can you double glaze my existing windows?

In most cases, yes. We fit double glazed units straight into your existing timber or aluminium frames, so you keep your windows and their character. Around 90% of homes can be retrofitted. A few types, like tilt-and-turn windows and some aluminium sliders, are not suitable, and we will tell you honestly when we come out to measure.

How much does retrofit double glazing cost?

Every home is different, so we quote after a free measure rather than publish a price list. As a guide, our retrofit double glazing usually comes in at a fraction of what the patented systems charge, because we focus on the glazing that makes the difference and skip the extras you can do yourself.

Can you retrofit double glazing to timber sash windows?

Yes. Timber windows, including double-hung and sash, are some of our most common retrofit jobs, and keeping the original timber frame is exactly what helps a period home hold its character.

Can you double glaze sliding doors and French doors?

Yes. Sliding doors and French doors can usually be retrofitted with double glazed units, the same as most windows. We will confirm when we come out to measure.

Will it actually make my home warmer and quieter?

Yes. Argon-filled double glazed units noticeably cut heat loss, draughts, condensation and outside noise compared with single glazing. Adding a Low-E coating can push the thermal performance further if you want it.

Do I have to replace my whole window frames?

No. That is the point of retrofitting. We reglaze into your existing frames rather than tearing them out, which keeps the job cleaner, quicker and more affordable, and keeps your home’s look intact.

How long does it take?

Your made-to-measure units usually take around 2 to 3 weeks, and most installs are done in a single day, a little longer for larger jobs.

Do you charge for a quote?

No. There is no call-out fee to come out, measure and quote. For simple jobs we can often give you an estimate over the phone first.
